Practical reference
Local Chess Board
Play legal local chess with another person using the same screen. Check, checkmate, castling and en passant are modeled.
Rules you can try
Start with two central pawns. Move knights before launching an early queen attack. A king is in check when an opposing piece attacks its square. You cannot leave your king in check. A player is checkmated if their king is attacked and no legal move remains. Castling moves the king two squares and the rook past the king; it is forbidden through check. En passant captures a pawn that has just advanced two squares. Promotion currently chooses a queen.
Three practical techniques
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Start a new round | Use the New, Shuffle or Restart control when you want a fresh board. |
| Learn the rule | Read the instruction shown above the board. Not every game follows the same move rules. |
| Practise deliberately | Try a specific goal, such as winning without hints or reducing move count. |
